A self-storage unit can be a great solution to many storage problems. One way of maximising the space inside your unit can be to install metal racking. Here are some top tips on how to do it.

Frame installation

When assembling tall sections of racking, you should start by fitting the two lowest shelves before you attach the upper poles. Fitting the shelves helps to keep the whole structure steady as you work.

Attach the plastic shelf brackets to the four bottom poles first, while holding the shelf vertically. When the brackets are attached, fit one caster or foot to each pole. Now you can push the first two poles through the shelf supporting holes, making sure that the shelf is firmly in place. Once the first two poles are in place, fit the other two through the holes on the top of the shelf. By giving each pole a twist, you can seat the shelf supports more firmly.

Apply a little pressure to each corner of the bottom shelf to firmly seat it into place. If the fittings are still a little bit wobbly, don't be afraid to give them a clout with a rubber mallet. Sometimes, a little brute force is necessary to get a tight fit!

Shelf installation

You should now have the basic structure in position and you can begin to add the remaining shelves. It's important to work out how many shelves you will need for storing all your boxes or packages of stuff and also how much height will be required to accommodate them.

Set each shelf onto its brackets gently and be prepared to wiggle the shelf around a little, until it slots firmly into place. Note here that if you try to force the shelf into place to aggressively, you could jam it and end up with one side of the shelf stuck downwards. If this happens, use an upward blow from a rubber mallet to dislodge the stuck side of the shelf and start again.

By applying equal pressure to each side of the shelf you can encourage it to slot securely into place.

Metal racking and shelving can maximise the space available in your self-hire storage unit. If you don't feel confident about assembling the shelving yourself, just ask the storage unit provider for assistance. Most suppliers will be happy to assemble and install racking and shelving in your self-storage unit.
