Of all the hard work involved with moving into a new house, it's often the packing that's the worst bit. Whether you plan in advance and get it all done as early as possible or leave it until the last minute, it's still stressful. To get through it smoothly and finish as soon as you can, you need military-style precision and a lot of patience.

If you have children, it's likely to be much more difficult. To help reduce your stress levels, here are some tips for packing up kids' rooms when you're getting ready to leave your old home.

Start early

It's a good idea to start all of your packing early, but particularly with children's rooms. This allows you to do things gradually, packing the least important things first. Children don't have much patience when their favourite toys are packed away, so the gradual approach helps to minimise the time they have to go without things.

Get the kids involved

The first and most obvious reason to involve your kids in packing up their things is that a few extra helping hands is always a good thing. It can even be fun for them, and keep them out of trouble while you're getting everything sorted.

But another reason it's a good idea to enlist their help is that it lets them see where all of their belongings are going. This helps to reduce their anxiety over the move, particularly with young children. They can see that everything is safe and going with you.

Organise for your new home

If you're going from a situation with children sharing a room into one where they have a room each, make sure you pack their things separately to make life easier at the other end. It might be quite time-consuming, especially if there are a lot of toys mixed together, but you'll be glad you did it when you're unpacking.

Leave out some entertainment

Don't forget how boring it is for kids when you're moving home. There's a lot of dull adult stuff going on, you'll be busy, and they can really start to wear down your patience when they want attention. Separate a book or toy from your packed items so there's something to keep them busy.

Make a plan

Plan in advance and write down what's going to be packed and in what order. Make sure your children are familiar with it and can have some input, and it will reduce tantrums and arguments later.
