If you go all-out when decorating your home at Christmas and have a lot of decorations you want to store in a storage unit, here are some tips to follow.

Hang your garlands, tinsel and tree lights on the walls

One of the great things about putting your decorations in a unit rather than your loft is that you'll have lots of space. You should take advantage of this, by hanging your tinsel and garlands on the unit's large walls (with, for example, adhesive hooks that you can remove without damaging the unit's walls). This will ensure that the individual tinsel strands won't get creased or torn and that the central string that they're all attached to won't break, as it could do if the tinsel were squished in a box with lots of other decorations. Likewise, putting your garlands on the walls, instead of curling them up and stuffing them in boxes will mean the faux holly and other green leaves won't get creased, and the berries won't fall off.

You might also find it helpful to hang your Christmas tree lights on the unit's walls. This will save you the yearly chore of having to spend an hour untangling them before you can put them on the tree (provided you're careful to put them neatly into whichever box you'll be using to transport them from the unit to your home next Christmas).

Dry off your outdoor Christmas decorations before storing them in the unit

When returning your outdoor Christmas decorations to the unit after Christmas is over, you should ensure that you use a towel to soak up any snow or rain that landed on them whilst they were on display. The reason for this is as follows; whilst these outdoor decorations are usually waterproof or water-resistant and so will not come to any harm if they get wet, the same is not true for the other decorations you'll be storing alongside them in the unit.

If your large plastic snowman and your Christmas signage are both wet when you put them in this unit, your nearby Christmas stockings, festive paper garlands and felt Christmas bunting might get mouldy and musty. When you then go back to this unit next Christmas to pick up your decorations, you might find that many of them are ruined and that you have to throw them out and go shopping for new decorations.
